Will Hoover's Colt Sale set the Market?

Oct 17, 2025 at 09:46 pm by cindy4dixie

Hoover's Colt Sale lays a strong foundation for the 2025 Colt Sales.  In 2024 Hoover's Colt Sale average was $4000,  They had very few no sales and 12 colts sold for over $7000.

Hoover's 2025 Colt Sale was slightly different in may ways.  First, the overall total was about $4160.  They had two no sales in the mule colts and sold 221 head.

The top 5 ranged from $11,100 to $9400; average of top five was $9880

The top 10 ranged from $11,100 to $8000; average of top 10 was about $9230.

In 2024 they sold twelve colts for $7000 and over.

In 2025 there was 15 over $7000.

Averages for todays sale: .08% under $2000; 16% sold between $2000 and $3000;  19% was $3000 to $4000; 72% sold from $4000 to $5000; .05% was in $6000 to $7000; .06% sold above $7000 with the top colt being $11,100.

SOOO, where does that leave us?  The top end of the colts are up; the middle is holding right where it was left in 2024; the lower end of the colts hung pretty strong.

If Hoover indeed does set the market, the Abner Stoltfus Sale along with J&E Sale may see the top quarter of the colts bring substantially more this year than last.

Another question I ask myself is 'who bought all the colts today?'.  One buyer loaded a little over a dozen.  Several purchased 5 or more head.  This still leaves a lot of colts to account for.

In looking back at notes, several colts were bought here and there by local farmers.  I can justify about 100 colts being purchased by traders; I can't totally say where the rest went.

Next week the buyers will travel to PA for two colts sales.  There will be approximately 350 plus colts to be purchased.

Pictures and individual breeders information will follow soon.
